The Royal British Legion sponsored play The Greater Game opens in London this September as part of the Somme 100 commemorations.
The Greater Game tells the story of the First World War footballing heroes of Clapton Orient Football Club (now Leyton Orient), during a four week run at The Southwark Playhouse.
Produced by Bermondsey born Michael Head and directed by Tilly Vosburgh (EastEnders, Far From The Madding Crowd, Atonement, Call the Midwife and Vera Drake), it depicts 41 members of the club’s team who fought at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Starring Nick Hancock, Charlie Clements and Danny Walters, the performance is based on the book ‘They Took the Lead’ by Stephen Jenkins.
The play is part of the Legion’s Battle of the Somme centenary commemorations and in turn, the Sports Remembers campaign.
The Greater Game runs from 15 September – 16 October, showing Monday to Saturday with matinees on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
