Nine-year-old Alfie, from Aberdeen, has lots of favourite things about school but his top four are “being with his friends, taking part in gym, big maths and computers”. He is being treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) for a rare condition that causes benign tumours to spread throughout the body. Alfie’s mum, Tracy, tells GOSH why she is so proud of her son on his first day back at school.
Back to school
Going to school provides Alfie with stability in an unsettling life, says his mum, Tracy: “I think it is very important for Alfie to attend school to give him some normality and stability in what can be a busy and unsettling life – with all the hospital check-ups, tests and procedures he goes through, and just dealing with his disease on a day-to-day basis. It is good for him to be around children his own age and to be able to be ‘just like everyone else’.”
“Alfie used to miss a lot of school but a drug therapy trial at GOSH has improved his health, so now he can attend more regularly. It has been a joy for him to make new friends and take part in activities he couldn’t do before.”
