Research is at the heart of Diabetes UK’s mission to transform the care and prevention of all forms of diabetes and to help find a cure. Last month Diabetes UK launched its new Research Strategy, setting out ambitious goals for 2015 to 2019 and the vital need for new investment.
The strategy was developed by working closely with scientists, healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes to ensure that it supports the wider aims of the charity and meets the needs of researchers and people living with diabetes across the UK.
Diabetes UK’s research goals
To meet the challenge of diabetes; Diabetes UK will work towards three research goals:
Care – Improve care and self-management for people living with diabetes today
Cure – Find ways to cure diabetes in those who have it now or develop it in the future
Prevent – Stop diabetes and its complications before they develop in those at risk
To achieve these goals, more money is needed for diabetes research. It is shocking that for every pound the UK spends on caring for diabetes, it spends just half a penny on diabetes research. The strategy is a call to action to change that over the next five years.
To help Diabetes UK achieve its research goals and maximise the benefits of research for
people with diabetes, the charity will:
Increase its own funding for diabetes research
Increase support for the diabetes research leaders of the future
Grow investment in UK diabetes research from its partners
Give people with diabetes a louder voice in research
