Researchers have been growing cells – the building blocks of every living creature, in laboratories for years. They are taken from samples of human tissues and raised in very specific conditions, mimicking those within the body. Each population of cells formed from a new sample is called a cell line. There are thousands of them being used by the research community around the world, including some generated from cancer cells. By conducting research on these cell lines, we can better understand our own bodies and in some instances, reduce the need for some experiments involving animals.
