Whale and Dolphin Conservation

Welcome to your update!
It’s summer in British Columbia, Canada – and that means it’s whale-season! The hydrophones at OrcaLab have come alive with the sounds of orca families travelling, socialising and feeding. The area is just full of life – humpback whales, dolphins and porpoises; sea lions roaring from their haul-out rocks and a multitude of different species of birds make this a magical (and noisy!) place to be. All the adoption orcas have put in an appearance and we were delighted to hear that on 1 August, Springer returned to Johnstone Strait with her baby, Spirit.
One story that’s really touched our hearts was the rescue of a Bigg’s (or transient) orca who stranded on rocks in the northern waters of British Columbia on 22 July. Whale researchers from Cetacea Lab, and other local volunteers, rallied round and did their best to keep the frightened whale wet and calm until the tide came up. After six hours of caring for the orca, the water rose and she was free.
As always, thank you for your support – and don’t forget, for more videos like this one and for up to the minute news on what your adoption is helping us achieve for orcas, follow us on Facebook or Twitter or sign up to our campaigns e-newsletter.
With very best wishes,
Rob Lott and the adopt an orca team.
